Nations League: Gakpo secures 1-1 draw for Netherlands against Klopp’s Germany
The Netherlands salvaged a 1-1 draw against Germany on Thursday, September 24, in Amsterdam, during the opening match of Group A2 in the Nations League. Cody Gakpo equalized with a volley in stoppage time, denying Jürgen Klopp a victory in his first match as head coach of the German national team.
Felix Nmecha had given Germany the lead in the first half, converting a close-range effort after a shot from Karim Adeyemi was parried into the box. The visitors maintained their advantage until Gakpo’s late intervention.
The match also marked Xavi Hernández’s debut as the Netherlands’ head coach. Adeyemi for Germany and Mexx Meerdink for the Netherlands both missed opportunities to extend the lead or equalize before Gakpo’s goal for Liverpool.
In the other match of Group A2, Greece secured a 2-1 victory in Serbia thanks to a late header from Tasos Douvikas. Greece now sits alone at the top with three points, ahead of the Netherlands and Germany, who each have one point.
