Nations League: De Bruyne rules out retirement and stays with Belgium

The playmaker has earned 124 caps since his debut in 2010. He explained that he still feels motivated and physically fit, while acknowledging that the next two years could be his last with the Red Devils. However, he does not rule out extending his international career if his form allows it.

New head coach, Mark van Bommel, asked him about his intentions following the World Cup. De Bruyne stated that he never considered stopping and noted that several teammates encouraged him to continue his international journey.

His decision provides a reference point for a team in transition. Axel Witsel has retired from international duty, while Thibaut Courtois will not participate in this Nations League campaign. De Bruyne thus remains one of the last key figures from the generation that brought Belgium to the top of the FIFA rankings.

The Napoli player also praised Van Bommel’s direct communication, who was appointed in July to lead Belgium through to Euro 2028. The Red Devils will then face France twice and Turkey during this first phase of the Nations League.

De Bruyne claims to have regained good physical condition since his return in August. He has just completed three full matches with Napoli, a rhythm that reinforces his choice to remain available for the Belgian national team.
