Cybercrime in Benin: the CNIN warns of a wave of WhatsApp account hacking

In a statement posted on its official page, the institution warns citizens about fraudulent schemes based on social engineering and phishing.

Cybercriminals are using tricks to encourage their victims to share the confidential verification code sent via SMS when setting up the application. Compromising an account exposes the user to severe risks, including identity theft, financial extortion, and the dissemination of fraudulent messages to all of their contacts.

In response, the specialized units of the CNIN are currently mobilized to identify and apprehend the networks behind these attacks.

Security Guidelines to Protect Your Account

In light of the threat, the CNIN recommends immediately implementing essential protection measures. This includes activating two-step verification. This enhanced security can be activated from the menu Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification.

It requires the creation of a personal PIN code that is essential to validate any access to the account. Maintain absolute confidentiality of the codes: no verification code or password should be shared.

The CNIN reminds that no administration or legitimate acquaintance requests the sharing of these secret identifiers.
