CAN 2027 Qualifiers: 21 new coaches take the stage
The 48 teams engaged in the group phase of the CAN 2027 qualifiers are kicking off the first day with a significant technical overhaul. Reuters reports that 21 newly appointed coaches are at the helm, including the managers of six of the ten African representatives at the 2026 World Cup.
Patrick Vieira is set to manage his first matches with Senegal against Mozambique and then Ethiopia. The 1998 World Cup champion, born in Dakar, is taking on a national team coaching role for the first time.
Hervé Renard returns to Côte d’Ivoire and will start against Ghana, while Aliou Cissé now leads Angola against Egypt. In South Africa, Pitso Mosimane begins his third stint in charge of the Bafana Bafana as they face Guinea.
Sébastien Migné’s Gabon will travel to Morocco. At 78 years old, Claude Le Roy is back with Congo, marking his twelfth national team coaching position, with a first match against Namibia.
The group phase features 48 teams divided into 12 groups. The qualifiers commence on September 24, and the first two matchdays will conclude on October 6. Twenty-four teams will participate in the final phase, which will be held in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
