Senegal: Mendy reveals he refused to return despite Vieira’s call

In an interview published on Tuesday, September 22, by The Guardian, Mendy explained that he spoke on the phone with the new head coach. The prospect of working with Vieira made him hesitate, but the Al-Ahli goalkeeper later called the coach back to confirm that he would not reverse his choice. He noted that his reflection had begun after the last Africa Cup of Nations.

The CAF officially announced his retirement after eight years with the national team and 59 appearances for Senegal. Mendy leaves the Lions with 31 matches without conceding a goal and played a key role in Senegal’s first continental title, won against Egypt in a penalty shootout in 2022.

His departure opens a new hierarchy in goal as Patrick Vieira begins his tenure. Senegal is set to kick off the qualifiers for the 2027 AFCON against Mozambique on September 25, followed by a match against Ethiopia on September 29.
