Both teams came into the match with one point each after two rounds in a Group B dominated by Canada and Switzerland. Bosnia and Herzegovina were coming off a heavy 4-1 defeat to Switzerland, while Qatar had suffered a 6-0 thrashing by Canada. The win allows the Bosnians to revive their ambitions in the race for qualification.

The match shifted in the first half when Kerim Alajbegović converted a penalty in the 29th minute, after an assist from Ivan Bašić. Soon after, Mahmud Abunada, usually Qatar’s goalkeeper but this time listed among the key incidents, scored an own goal in the 34th minute to widen the gap. Qatar pulled one back through Hassan Al Haydos in the 42nd minute from an Edmilson Junior assist, but Bosnia and Herzegovina made the difference definitive in the second half with a goal from Ermin Mahmić in the 80th minute, set up by Dennis Hadzikadunić.

Tactically, Bosnia and Herzegovina, coached by Sergej Barbarez, lined up in a 4-4-2 with an attacking duo of Ermedin Demirović and Edin Džeko. The central setup also included midfielder Kerim Alajbegović, scorer of a key goal, as well as midfielders Ivan Šunjić, Ivan Bašić and Esmir Bajraktarević. Defensively, the back line featured Sead Kolašinac, Nikola Katić, Stjepan Radeljić and Arjan Malić. Qatar, coached by Julen Lopetegui, set up in a 4-3-3 with Akram Afif and Hassan Al Haydos in attack, supported by Edmilson Junior, still active with several key passes, and Karim Boudiaf in midfield.

Statistically, Bosnia and Herzegovina dominated possession with 58% and totaled 14 shots, five of them on target, while Qatar recorded only six attempts. The victory gives the Bosnians renewed hope in a group where every point remains crucial. For their part, the Qataris will have to respond in their next match to keep their qualification chances alive.
