Liga: Rodri reveals the reasons behind his choice between Real Madrid and Barça

The transfer of Rodri to FC Barcelona could have taken a completely different direction. Before committing to the Blaugranas, the Spanish midfielder had extensive discussions with José Mourinho, then coach of Real Madrid, who wanted to attract him to the Spanish capital. In an interview with radio COPE, Rodri confirmed the discussions with the Portuguese coach. Mourinho reportedly presented him with his vision of football as well as the tactical principles he intended to implement at Santiago Bernabéu.

“Real Madrid did everything possible to recruit me. José Mourinho expressed his enthusiasm about having me, about his vision of football… it really appealed to me, he is a top-level coach,” said the Spanish international. Despite the interest from Madrid and discussions with Mourinho, Rodri ultimately favored FC Barcelona. The player explained that he made this choice based on his prospects for development. “I therefore decided to join Barça and not Real Madrid for sporting reasons; here, I can progress much more,” he added. Rodri thus left Manchester City to join Barça for a reported transfer fee of £65.4 million.
