Nigerian singer Tems becomes the first African artist to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100, confirming her global status.

The Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, globally known as Tems, continues to push the boundaries for African artists. A Grammy Award winner, she has become the first African female artist to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100, the ultimate benchmark of the American music industry.

This new milestone was reached thanks to the surprise entry of her track What You Need at No. 93 on the weekly chart, bringing the total number of Tems songs on the prestigious hit parade to seven. A performance that confirms her enduring foothold on the international music scene. With this total, the Nigerian artist joins her compatriot Burna Boy as well as the South African group Seether, the only African artists to have, to date, reached this symbolic threshold on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tems had already made a mark in 2022 by entering history as the first African artist to reach the number-one position on the Billboard Hot 100, thanks to the track Wait For U, a collaboration with Future and Drake. A global success that marked a turning point in the worldwide recognition of the continent’s artists. However, the singer could soon establish herself at the top of this symbolic chart on her own. The track Bunce Road Blues by J. Cole, on which she appears alongside Future, is indeed expected to enter the Billboard Hot 100 next week. A new step that would further strengthen Tems’ status as a major figure in contemporary world music.
