Tackling noise pollution: more than a ton of firecrackers seized in Benin

As part of a broad operation led by the Republican Police and the competent authorities, more than a tonne of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices were seized in several localities across the country, including Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, Porto-Novo and Parakou.

This campaign aims to safeguard public tranquility and reduce the risks associated with using these products, which are often sold informally and without authorization.

Security officials warn that these pyrotechnic devices can cause significant noise pollution and lead to accidents, sometimes serious, affecting especially children and other vulnerable people.

The sale and use of firecrackers are strictly prohibited in Benin, particularly during the year-end celebrations. Offenders face penalties ranging from confiscation of the products to prosecution for endangering the lives of others.

The authorities are calling on citizens to act responsibly and stay vigilant. They encourage families to opt for safer forms of celebration that respect the local noise environment, in order to guarantee peaceful and secure year-end celebrations for all.
