In a closed contest, long locked down by Ghana’s defensive unit, the Three Lions found it difficult to create offensive solutions, failing to hit the target with any attempts in the first half under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel.

Frustrated by this lack of efficiency, the English players saw tensions rise as they approached halftime. An altercation erupted after a tackle deemed too aggressive by Jude Bellingham on Jérôme Opoku, leading to a scuffle in front of the Ghanaian bench. The Real Madrid midfielder had to be restrained by his teammates, including Morgan Rogers, while several members of the coaching staff intervened to calm the situation. Asked after the match, Carlos Queiroz reflected on this episode, stating that the situation could have escalated further. “ My intention was simply to ask him to calm down after that tackle. It could have led to a second yellow card, or even a red, because there was clearly a foul. But I mainly wanted to prevent the situation from worsening,” explained the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. The Portuguese coach also commented on what he viewed as an excessive reaction from the English player: “He reacted poorly to some remarks, and that’s how the tension escalated.”
