Ethiopia: National dialogue to submit recommendations to Parliament on September 20

The national conference, which began on July 15 and concluded on August 22, brought together approximately 4,000 participants around eight major themes. The Commission states that the discussions yielded recommendations aimed at public institutions, with broad consensus on most of the topics addressed.

The final document is expected to include a comprehensive report of the dialogue, the participants’ recommendations, and an implementation strategy. The Commission emphasizes that its proposals are advisory, and final decisions rest with the relevant authorities.

The timeline aims to submit the work to Parliament, which established the Commission, before the end of its term. The recommendations will then be communicated to the relevant bodies of the federal government, regional states, and federal city administrations, along with a mechanism to monitor their implementation.

The handling of contributions related to Tigray will follow a specific procedure. Mesfin Araya noted that 164 individuals participated in Addis Ababa to represent or voice concerns related to the region, where security and political constraints prevented the process from being organized under the same conditions.

For now, the Commission plans to submit the recommendations concerning Tigray to the federal government. Its current mandate extends until October 24, 2026, and the next Parliament will need to decide on the institutional future of its activities.
