Davis Cup: Arthur Fils Withdraws Against Canada to Preserve His Health

The 22-year-old player had been selected in August by captain Paul-Henri Mathieu alongside Quentin Halys, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, and Arthur Rinderknech. The French Tennis Federation had then specified that the lineup could still change before the qualifying match for the Final 8.

Fils exited a shortened US Open in the first round against Stefanos Tsitsipas. This elimination came after a very strong run since his return to the circuit in February.

The Frenchman is returning from a long period of unavailability due to a stress fracture in the lower back in 2025. He has again experienced intermittent absences this season, which reinforces his determination not to continue without a full medical check-up.

This caution comes at the end of a season that brought him back to the forefront, notably with his first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati. However, his withdrawal deprives France of its highest-ranked player for the trip to Canada.

The Canada–France match will take place at the Videotron Centre in Quebec. The winner will advance to the Davis Cup final phase scheduled in Bologna in November, where seven qualifiers will join Italy, the host country.

No replacement had yet been officially announced at the time of publication. France retains the option to adjust its squad before the start of the match.
