CRIET: 5 years of imprisonment and a 10 million fine requested against an internet user for glorifying a coup d’État

The use of social networks has closed in on a young man who has been incarcerated for several months. Prosecuted before the Court for the Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism (CRIET), the accused is charged with glorifying a coup d’État.

The prosecution follows publications posted online the day after the foiled coup attempt on Sunday, December 7, 2025. In his messages noted by the public prosecutor, the defendant notably claimed that President Talon had carried out a coup d’État to remain in power, before repeating himself by rejoicing over the events and calling on the country to join the Sahel States Alliance (AES).

According to Libre Express, at the hearing, the individual admitted to all the facts attributed to him while pleading for the judges’ clemency. Despite these confessions, the public prosecutor demanded a heavy sentence.

The prosecution requested 60 months of imprisonment and a fine of 10 million CFA francs. The verdict in this case is expected on October 15, 2026.
