CAF Cup: ASPAC eliminated after 4-2 defeat on away goals
ASPAC was eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday, September 16, in Lomé, following a 4-2 defeat to The Panthers FC. After winning the first leg 3-1, the Beninese club finished with an aggregate score of 5-5 over the two legs but lost on the away goals rule, with four goals scored by the Equatorial Guinean side compared to three by the Portuaires.
ASPAC actually took the lead twice at the Stade de Kégué. Moussa Yarou Maye opened the scoring in the 26th minute, before The Panthers equalized in the 32nd. The same Beninese forward restored the advantage for his team in stoppage time of the first half, but the visitors responded almost immediately to head into the break at 2-2.
The Panthers took control after the break, scoring two more goals in the 66th and 74th minutes. The final score of 4-2 erased the advantage built by ASPAC in the first leg, which they won 3-1 in Douala, bringing the aggregate score of the tie to 5-5.
Tied on aggregate, The Panthers advanced thanks to their four away goals, compared to three for ASPAC in the first leg. The away goals rule remains in effect for CAF’s knockout rounds of the Confederation Cup.
The Panthers will face USM Alger in the second preliminary round. According to the CAF schedule, the first leg matches of this stage are set to take place from October 16 to 18, followed by the return legs from October 23 to 25.
