U20 Amazons: Ouzérou hints at departure after World Cup
The future of Abdoulaye Ouzérou as head coach of the U20 Amazons remains uncertain following Benin’s first participation in a women’s World Cup. Back from Poland, the coach explained that he must first consult with his administration before confirming whether he will continue with the team.
In an interview broadcast on Bénin TV and reported on Wednesday by Matin Libre, Ouzérou acknowledged that it was “difficult” to say if he would continue. He stated that he has an idea of the direction he wants to take in his career, while noting that “the door is open” to a change after discussions with his administration.
Ouzérou primarily aims to further the development of this generation towards the senior national team. He has set goals for Benin to qualify for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and, in the longer term, to achieve a first appearance at the senior World Cup.
The U20 Amazons exited the World Cup in the group stage. In their final match of Group A, they lost 4-1 to Poland on September 11 in Bielsko-Biała, with a goal from Romaine Gandonou in the 87th minute, according to FIFA.
The Beninese delegation returned home on Sunday, September 13, two days after their last group match.
