Cairo 2026: Parakou falls 67-80 to Guinea, secures silver
The University of Parakou claimed the silver medal in men’s basketball at the 12th African University Games after losing 67-80 to the Guinean University Sports Federation on Tuesday, September 15, in Cairo. The Beninese team finished as the runner-up in the African university championship after four consecutive victories.
The final reversed the outcome of the first encounter between the two teams. In the group stage, Parakou had defeated the Guinean university team 63-49 before facing the same opponent for the continental title.
The Beninese team began their tournament with a victory, defeating Higher Education Institutes 87-53, followed by a narrow win against the American University in Cairo, 73-71. This winning streak allowed them to enter the knockout stage undefeated.
In the semi-finals, the University of Parakou dominated the University of Canada 96-52 to secure their place in the final. This victory marked the fourth consecutive win for the team coached by Jean M’Po.
The 12th African University Games are taking place in Cairo from September 8 to 16, 2026, bringing together approximately 2,000 athletes across 18 disciplines.
