Benin: over 45 million CFA francs scammed from a traditional healer with promises of a ministerial post

Two men, including the president of a foundation, were arrested on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, and placed in custody. They are expected to be presented to the special prosecutor on Monday, September 7, 2026, according to information from Bip Radio.

The case originated from a complaint filed by a traditional healer. According to the investigation, the main suspect approached him posing as an advisor to the Presidency of the Republic, also claiming to lead a foundation and to have contributed to the appointment of four ministers in the previous government.

Relying on this false influence, he allegedly convinced the victim that he could obtain a ministerial portfolio in the new executive formed on May 24, 2026.

To finance the various money demands made by this so-called “minister maker” under the pretext of procedures, the complainant did not hesitate to make heavy financial sacrifices.

He states that he sold his house, mobilized money from his tontines, and took out various loans, paying a total of more than 45 million CFA francs while repeatedly submitting his curriculum vitae. The disappointment was total on the day the government list was published, as his name did not appear.

An imminent appearance before the special prosecutor

After realizing he had been duped by a fraudulent scheme dating back at least to 2023, the traditional healer took legal action. The main suspect and his alleged accomplice were thus arrested, while the complainant was interviewed on Friday, September 4, 2026, by investigators.

Investigations continue pending their referral to the special prosecutor of the CRIET scheduled for early next week.
