According to AS, Arsenal have received a favourable signal in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez, the Atlético Madrid forward. The Gunners have been tracking the Argentina international, who has already featured in two World Cups, for several months. The London club is said to want to bolster its attack with a player capable of playing alongside Viktor Gyökeres.

Signed last summer for around £64 million, the Swedish forward quickly justified the expectations placed on him. Scoring 21 goals in his first season at the Emirates Stadium, Gyökeres contributed to Arsenal’s success in the Premier League as well as their run to the Champions League final.

Despite this successful first campaign, the London club’s leadership are said to believe that reinforcement of Julián Álvarez’s calibre would add a new dimension to Mikel Arteta’s attack. The Argentine, capable of playing as a central striker or in support of the forward, would fit the profile Arsenal are looking for. It remains to be seen whether they can convince Atlético Madrid, who do not appear willing to facilitate the departure of one of their key players.
