The Nigerian Afrobeat star revealed she went through a period of inner turmoil after discovering she had been mistaken about her real age for several years. An experience she now describes as a moment of clarity and self-reflection.
Nigerian singer Yemi Alade, a major figure in Afrobeat, spoke about a difficult period in her life marked by a lie about her age that plunged her into a brief depression. A guest on a show hosted by journalist Chude Jideonwo, the artist explained that for several years she had claimed to be 22, before realizing she was actually 25.
“There was a time when, for about three years, I always said I was 22. Then one day I did the math and realized I was already 25. I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t accept it.”, she said.
The performer of the hit « Knack Am » explained that this experience opened her eyes to the effects of self-deception and its impact on mental health. « It was a difficult but also revealing period. I realized how easily you can lie to yourself without even noticing it», she added.
