World Cup 2026 prep: Amman tournament under threat from Middle East tensions
Scheduled for this month in Amman, the friendly tournament in which the Nigerian national football team was set to participate could be relocated to Europe due to regional tensions, while Iran is already considering withdrawing from the competition.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could disrupt Nigeria’s international schedule. The Super Eagles were due this month to participate in a four-nation friendly tournament initially planned in Amman, Jordan. The competition was to bring together the host country, , as well as the Iranian national football team and the Costa Rica national football team. But the evolution of the situation in the region, marked by tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran, could force the organizers to rethink their plans.
According to Colin Udoh, a former head of media relations for the Super Eagles, the tournament could ultimately be moved to the European continent. The analyst also states that the Iranian squad is considering withdrawing from the competition. “A source from the NFF tells me that the mini-tournament the Super Eagles were due to play this month will be relocated, probably to Europe, due to the situation in the Middle East. But Iran will no longer participate”, he wrote on X.
Another option is also being studied if the tournament cannot be maintained. “However, if a tournament proves impossible, the organizers are working to organize a single match between Nigeria and Jordan, which would also take place in Europe”, added the journalist. On the Nigerian federation’s side, caution remains. Asked about the situation, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, was measured: “We are closely monitoring the situation for the moment; there are three weeks left.”
