Tennis: after the Billie Jean King Cup, Benin continues with its national championship
Hardly had the success of the women’s team at the Billie Jean King Cup been celebrated when Beninese tennis continued its momentum. The Beninese Tennis Federation kicked off the national championship, with nearly 300 players engaged on the courts of Porto-Novo and Cotonou.

Beninese tennis knows no downtime. Just a few days after the historic qualification of the women’s team for Group III Africa of the Billie Jean King Cup, the Beninese Tennis Federation (FBT) launched its 2026 national championship. Since Monday, the courts of the Charles de Gaulle stadium in Porto-Novo and those of the Darboux Academy in Cotonou have been at the heart of this competition, which gathers about 300 players. Beyond the national title, the participants are also looking to earn points to climb the FBT rankings.
This edition is marked by a novelty: the organization of a tournament reserved for veterans. Launched on August 8, this competition runs parallel to the national championship. Through this innovation, the FBT aims to give more visibility to the different categories of players and maintain the momentum around Beninese tennis. The simultaneous organization of these competitions also reflects the leaders’ desire to put tennis in the spotlight.
A dynamic driven by results
The month of August 2026 will be remembered as a particularly rich period for Beninese tennis. On August 15, the women’s team of Benin indeed achieved a remarkable performance in Abidjan, securing its qualification for Group III Africa of the Billie Jean King Cup.
Led notably by Gloriana Nahum, Jessica Togbé, and the HONFOGA sisters, the Benin team overcame all obstacles in front of them before winning in the final against the host nation, Côte d’Ivoire, with a score of 2-1. This took place on the central court of the Sofitel Ivoire, on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
A brilliant qualification that gives a new dimension to women’s tennis in Benin, which continues to grow. Indeed, the victory of the girls rewards the efforts made by the players, their coaching staff, and the officials of the Federation. For Jean-Claude Talon and his collaborators, this momentum is far from over. Through international performance and mobilization around the national championship, the executive committee of the FBF aims to maintain the pace and continue its titanic work to establish Beninese tennis in the long term alongside the sports disciplines that count on the continental stage.
