Chess: Russian Sergey Indeykin dies at 36 after contracting malaria in Nigeria

The chess world has been struck by a sudden loss. Sergey Indeykin, an official with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), died at the age of 36 after contracting a severe form of malaria during a professional stay in Nigeria. The Russian had travelled to Abuja at the beginning of August to take part in the organisation of the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Championships. The competition was held from August 1 to 8 in the Nigerian capital.

As a former operations director and FIDE delegate, Indeykin was among the officials mobilised for the event. His presence in Abuja had been confirmed in official communications on the tournament. FIDE announced his death on August 23, referring to a “sudden illness” without giving further medical details. According to reports since then, Indeykin is said to have developed a severe case of malaria after his trip to Nigeria. His death at such a young age has caused emotion in the chess community, where he was appreciated for his role in organising and promoting the sport.
