Spain: De la Fuente extends contract until 2030 after World Cup triumph
Luis de la Fuente has reached an agreement to extend his contract with the Spanish national team until the 2030 World Cup. The 65-year-old coach, who was previously contracted until Euro 2028, will now remain at the helm of La Roja as they defend their world title.
The two-year extension was revealed on Tuesday, September 15, by public radio RNE and reported by Reuters. This announcement comes less than two months after Spain’s victory at the 2026 World Cup, which they won on July 19 against Argentina.
De la Fuente had already led Spain to the Nations League title in 2023 and to Euro 2024. The 2026 World Cup victory adds a third major trophy to his tenure, which began in December 2022.
The Spanish Football Federation noted on September 9 that the coach has achieved 38 wins in 50 matches at the helm of the national team, translating to a success rate of 78%. The RFEF also highlighted a streak of 38 matches without defeat following the World Cup final.
The new contract will cover the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host with Portugal and Morocco. La Roja will therefore approach the tournament at home with the same coach who led them to their second world title.
Before this milestone, Spain will return to competition on September 26 at Wembley against England for their first Nations League match, followed by a home game against Croatia on September 29.
