Porto-Novo: an infant found dead in a trash bin in Djrado
In a horrifying find, the residents of the Djrado district in Porto-Novo were shaken on the evening of Tuesday, June 24, 2025. The lifeless body of an infant was discovered around 11 pm, abandoned in a waste bin near the local public primary school.

According to initial findings, the baby was already dead when found. The basket containing the little victim’s body was placed on a heap of refuse, quickly drawing a crowd of shocked onlookers dismayed by this unbearable scene.
Alerted, the police arrived on the scene to carry out customary investigations. An immediate inquiry was launched to identify the person responsible for the abandonment and to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
At present, numerous questions remain unanswered. Was the baby already deceased before being abandoned? Did it die from hypothermia or another trauma? The autopsy results could provide crucial insights into this tragedy.
This incident starkly raises the issue of unwanted pregnancies, the abandonment of newborns, and the lack of support systems for distressed mothers. The local population, still in shock, is calling for vigilance and improved management of extreme social situations leading to such actions.
