Eligible for Nigeria and Austria, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Chukwuemeka would be in advanced talks with the Austrian Football Federation ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Carney Chukwuemeka could soon decide on his international future. The former Chelsea midfielder, now at Borussia Dortmund, would be close to opting for Austria, according to The Athletic. Aged 22, the player has several options. Born in Austria to Nigerian parents, he is eligible to represent both the Super Eagles and the Austrian national team. But the Austrian Football Federation has reportedly stepped up its efforts to persuade the attacking midfielder to commit ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Chukwuemeka has so far represented England at youth levels, up to the Under-20s. Having never played for England’s senior team, he still has the option to switch sporting nationality, in accordance with FIFA regulations. The matter could thus evolve quickly, as federations race to attract dual-national talents.
