Memory recognition: Ten people of African descent officially obtain Beninese citizenship.

The official ceremony, marked by the performance of the national anthem, was presided over by the Minister of Justice and Legislation, Yvon Detchenou, and conducted by his technical advisor, Marie Rose Sossa.

This initiative marks the symbolic and legal return of descendants of victims of the transatlantic slave trade. Among the recipients, individuals like Lavaury Gutemberg Théodore and Kiavué Francelise expressed their pride in setting foot on the land of their ancestors and solidifying this connection to their heritage, praising a move they perceive as a historic victory for their deported families.

This event is part of a series of legal reforms adopted to facilitate the granting of Beninese citizenship to people of African origin who are descendants of those involved in the transatlantic slave trade.
