Madonna to open the MTV VMAs, twenty-three years after her last show

This comeback comes as Madonna leads the nominations for this edition with eleven nods, a personal record for a single year. She is nominated for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year.

The ceremony will take place at the Peacock Theater and will be hosted by Snoop Dogg. It will be broadcast live on CBS and MTV, as well as on Paramount+, starting at 7:30 pm Eastern Time.

Madonna’s last performance at the VMAs was in 2003. Dressed as a bride, she shared the stage with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera for a medley that included “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood.” The kisses exchanged during the performance became iconic moments in the history of the ceremony.

The artist’s relationship with the VMAs dates back to the very first edition in 1984, when she performed “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress. This performance became one of the event’s most iconic moments and helped establish the singer as one of its most associated figures.

This year, Madonna has eleven nominations, ahead of Taylor Swift, who has nine. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each received seven nominations, while Nirvana is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award during the evening.
