The 40-year-old actress and director shared that she was present at the birth alongside the woman who carried their child. The baby arrived thirteen days past the expected due date. Dunham described the moment she heard her first cry, before introducing herself to the baby as her mother.

In her account, Lena Dunham also reflected on the relationship she developed with the surrogate.
