Barack and Michelle Obama announce the death of their dog Sunny

The joint message posted on Instagram reflects a life filled with play and adventure. The Obamas describe Sunny as a “precious” member of their family and express that she will be greatly missed.

Sunny joined the family in August 2013, just a few months after Barack Obama began his second term. She shared her days with Bo, the other Portuguese water dog of the Obamas, who passed away from cancer in 2021.

The former president recalls an athletic dog, full of energy and capable of jumping over the hedges on the South Lawn of the White House. Despite her breed, which is typically comfortable in water, Sunny hated getting wet. She also preferred the company of humans over other dogs, except for Bo, whom she watched over closely.

The black dog had become a familiar figure during the Obama presidency. She appeared at public events, in the White House’s Christmas decorations, and in official photographs alongside Barack, Michelle, Malia, and Sasha Obama.

In their tribute, the Obamas imagine Sunny now reuniting with her “big brother” Bo. The couple did not disclose the cause of her death, which occurred on Tuesday, September 15.
