Cape Verde: After 25 deaths in Fogo, the state audits the road to Chã das Caldeiras

A team from Estradas de Cabo Verde is set to examine the route and propose measures to mitigate risks on this mountainous road.

The audit specifically focuses on the section where the vehicle left the roadway and fell into a ravine approximately 30 meters deep. Authorities are considering the installation of guardrails and new traffic regulations tailored to the particularly steep characteristics of the route.

Among the options under consideration is a restriction, or even a ban, on heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks on certain segments. However, exceptions may be made for emergency or disaster situations.

The accident occurred on Saturday, September 5 during the journey between Chã das Caldeiras and Campanas de Cima. The official toll reports 25 dead and 14 injured. Thirteen individuals remained hospitalized on Tuesday, according to the crisis cabinet. Most of the victims were children and teenagers returning from an outing, according to information gathered by authorities and reported by the Associated Press.

An investigation is still ongoing into the causes

The exact circumstances of the tragedy are yet to be determined. Initial local reports suggested a possible tire failure, but no definitive conclusions have been announced by authorities. The outing had been organized privately by the bus driver, who also died in the accident, and not by local schools.

The government has declared two days of national mourning in honor of the victims. Authorities have also mobilized rescue services, medical teams, and support systems for the affected families.
