Don Jazzy: «Ayra Starr changed my life»
Nigerian producer Don Jazzy has paid tribute to Ayra Starr, whose early career he helped launch at Mavin Records. The label boss says the singer has, in turn, profoundly influenced his own career.
Don Jazzy has not forgotten Ayra Starr’s beginnings. The Nigerian producer looked back on how he met the singer after a social media user posted an old photo of the artist on X, praising the role Don Jazzy played in her career and suggesting the producer had steered her away from a path that might otherwise have led her into teaching.
In response, the Mavin Records boss set the record straight by recalling the singer’s influence on his own career. «I bless the day someone showed me her freestyle on Instagram», he wrote. Don Jazzy went on to say Ayra Starr had also had a considerable impact on his life. «She’s definitely changed my life too. And she’s been a real dream Starrgirl», he added.
Don Jazzy first spotted Ayra Starr through the freestyles and covers she posted on Instagram. Impressed by her potential, he signed her to Mavin Records in 2020. Since then, the singer has established herself as one of the leading figures of Afrobeats’ new generation, vindicating the Nigerian producer’s early bet.
