Disappointed by José Mourinho’s remarks, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois believes that no celebration can justify racist acts.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did not hide his discomfort after José Mourinho’s statements about the incident involving Vinícius Júnior and Gianluca Prestianni.
During the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg against Benfica, which the Madrid side won 1-0, Vinícius had informed the referee of racist remarks allegedly made by the opposing player.
After the match, Mourinho said that the Brazilian’s dancing celebration may have provoked the reaction of the local supporters, a remark that drew many reactions.
On the eve of the return match at the Santiago Bernabéu, Courtois sought to clarify his position, in remarks relayed by Fabrizio Romano: “Mourinho is Mourinho. As a coach, you always defend your club and support your players… but one thing disappointed me.”
The Belgian goalkeeper continued: “He used Vini’s celebration as an excuse. You can’t justify racism with a celebration.” A firm message, in a context particularly sensitive around racism in European stadiums.
