The Benin loses one of its engaged political figures. Former deputy Akpo Honanvi Irénée passed away on the night of Saturday, August 1, 2026, around midnight, at the National Hospital and University Center (CNHU) in Cotonou, at the age of 83.

Former civil servant at the Presidency under the PRPB regime, he made his mark on the national political scene during the advent of democratic renewal.

He notably served in Parliament during the second legislature of the democratic era, from 1995 to 1999, under the banner of the Renaissance of Benin party (RB).

Strongly involved in the political landscape of the Collines department, he held the position of coordinator of the Party for Development and Social Progress (PDPS) in the commune of Ouessè.

He also worked alongside his brother, former minister Benoît Dègla Assouan, in founding his political formation, leaving the memory of a devoted actor in the public life of his country.
