Qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Iran’s team finds itself at the heart of a political standoff with the United States. Between threats of a boycott and hard-hitting statements, uncertainty hangs over the Iran national team’s participation in the tournament.

The conflict in the Middle East continues to spill over into the football world. Qualified for the next World Cup, the Iran team finds itself plunged into a fierce political controversy a few months before the tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, the Iranian squad’s participation has been questioned after very firm statements from its sports minister, Ahmad Doyanmali. He had publicly spoken of the possibility of boycotting the tournament, denouncing the geopolitical situation and the military strikes targeting his country.

But for now, no official notification has been transmitted to FIFA. The minister’s remarks therefore remain, legally, without effect on Team Melli’s presence in the competition. The situation has nonetheless worsened after the intervention of U.S. President Donald Trump. On his Truth Social network, the occupant of the White House invited Iran to confirm its withdrawal, even voicing concerns about the safety of the Iranian team on American soil.

A statement that did not take long to provoke a reaction from the Iranian federation and the national team. In a post published on its official Instagram account, the team reminded that the World Cup falls under FIFA’s sole authority and not that of a host country. Iranian officials also stressed the sporting legitimacy of their qualification, earned on the field. The post was accompanied by a particularly firm message, implying that the security issue could also concern the organization itself if it could not be guaranteed. For the moment, Iran has not officially withdrawn. But the verbal escalation between Iran and the United States is pushing tensions around the 2026 World Cup, casting unprecedented political uncertainty over Team Melli’s participation on the world stage
