Ukraine: Trump wants a quick end to the war, Putin assures he is not threatening Europe

The conversation took place after the visits to Moscow and then Kyiv by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to Kremlin diplomatic advisor Yuri Ushakov, the two leaders viewed this sequence positively and agreed to continue this channel of discussions.

Donald Trump emphasized his desire to see the conflict end as soon as possible, which, according to the Russian report, would pave the way for a broader normalization of relations between Washington and Moscow, particularly in economic and commercial areas.

Vladimir Putin, for his part, presented his interpretation of the military situation and assured that Russia had “no aggressive plans” towards European countries. This statement comes as several European capitals accuse Moscow of conducting or supporting hybrid operations, acts of sabotage, and interference campaigns.

At the time of publication, the White House had not yet provided an independent detailed account of the call. The main available information therefore came from the Kremlin, while international agencies confirmed the occurrence of the exchange and the key points reported by Yuri Ushakov.

The Witkoff-Kushner channel expected to continue

The Kremlin indicated that Putin and Trump wished to maintain contact and continue exchanges through Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The two envoys had traveled to Moscow and then Kyiv over the weekend to revive discussions that remain stalled on several key issues, including the occupied territories, security guarantees, and the terms of a potential ceasefire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that American mediators had presented ideas he considered serious and likely to advance the negotiations. Kyiv affirms its willingness to continue discussions, while demanding strong security guarantees and an enhancement of its air defense capabilities.

Diplomacy revived, fighting still ongoing

Despite the resumption of diplomatic contacts, hostilities continue. Russia maintains that it will achieve its military objectives, while Ukraine continues to request more air defense systems from its Western allies.

The call between Trump and Putin thus takes place at a time when Washington is seeking to initiate a new round of negotiations, although no decisive breakthrough has yet been announced. The two presidents agreed to stay in contact and to speak again if necessary.
