Uganda has decided to suspend all defense-related cooperation with Germany, according to a statement from army spokesperson Chris Magezi posted on the social media platform X.

“The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have, with immediate effect, suspended all ongoing military and defense cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany,” Magezi declared. “This decision follows credible intelligence reports indicating that the current German ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Matthias Schauer, is actively involved in subversive activities within the country.”

The suspension “will remain in place until the matter concerning the ambassador’s involvement with pseudo-political and military hostile forces operating within Uganda against the government is fully resolved,” he added.

On Friday, the Ugandan military had already accused some European diplomatic missions of supporting destabilizing forces. Particular attention was drawn to Ambassador Schauer’s alleged actions, which were described as “unrelated to diplomatic work and contrary to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the German Embassy in Uganda has yet to respond to the announcement.
