Theater: Lupita Nyong’o returns to the stage in ‘Pre-Existing Condition’

Written by Marin Ireland and directed by Maria Dizzia, the show follows a woman referred to simply as the letter “A.” After leaving a violent relationship, she attempts to rebuild her life while confronting the emotional, social, and legal effects of her experience.

Lupita Nyong’o will portray this role until September 26. Phillipa Soo, Susannah Flood, Hari Nef, Edie Falco, and Whitney White are set to follow her throughout the schedule. The production, which began its initial performances on September 1, is announced to run until January 8, 2027.

The cast also includes Dael Orlandersmith, Sarah Steele, and Greg Keller. According to information shared about the show, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Survivor Leadership Fund of Sanctuary for Families, an organization that supports victims of domestic violence and trafficking.

This production marks Lupita Nyong’o’s return to the New York stage. The Oscar-winning actress was nominated for a Tony Award for Eclipsed in 2016 and performed in Twelfth Night in 2025.
