Tanzania: Stock Exchange surpasses 40,600 billion shillings, a record
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange reached a total market capitalization of 40,607.57 billion Tanzanian shillings at the close on September 11, marking a record for the market. The official report from the DSE indicates a 2.97% increase over the week, following a rise above the 40,000 billion shilling threshold.

The growth has been significantly more pronounced since the beginning of the year. According to data from the DSE cited on Thursday by The Citizen, the capitalization stood at 40,300 billion shillings on September 10, compared to 24,200 billion shillings on January 2, reflecting a 66% increase and approximately 16,100 billion shillings in additional market value.

Banking stocks played a central role in this movement. NMB Bank reached a market capitalization of approximately 10,950 billion shillings on September 10, following another increase in its share price to 2,190 shillings. The bank became the first listed company in Dar es Salaam to exceed a valuation of 10,000 billion shillings.
The rise in stock prices did not coincide with an increase in weekly trading volume. Share transactions totaled 61.07 billion shillings during the week of September 7 to 11, down 29.31% from the previous week.
Local investors accounted for 99.85% of purchases during the week, while foreign investors represented only 0.15%. However, foreign investors accounted for 10.34% of sales, resulting in a net foreign selling balance of approximately 2.36 million dollars.
