Sudan: Yasser al-Atta received in Ankara amidst military cooperation
The Turkish Defense Minister, Yaşar Güler, received Sudanese General Yasser al-Atta in Ankara on Monday, August 17, 2026, as announced by the Turkish ministry in a publication shared by Anadolu Agency. This visit comes as military relations between Turkey and the Sudanese army are under scrutiny due to the use of Turkish weapons in the war in Sudan.

The Turkish communication does not detail the agenda of the meeting or any potential agreement. It only mentions the reception of the Sudanese official by the Defense Minister.
In March 2025, the Washington Post reported that the Turkish company Baykar had delivered at least $120 million worth of weapons to the Sudanese army in 2024. The paper indicated it was based on a contract, a end-user certificate, internal exchanges, and flight tracking data.
These deliveries are part of a conflict that began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war has attracted support from several foreign powers and increased the role of drones in the operations conducted by both sides.
Documented drone deliveries in 2025
According to the investigation by the Washington Post, the batch provided by Baykar included eight Bayraktar TB2 drones and several hundred warheads. The media also reported the presence of personnel responsible for technical support in deploying the equipment.
The Turkish embassy in Washington had contested the existence of Turkish military support to the parties in the conflict. Baykar, the Sudanese army, and the Sudanese government had not responded to the newspaper’s request for comments.
The available information does not establish that a new contract was signed during the visit on August 17. It also does not confirm claims that the meeting discussed the delivery of new drone models.
The Turkish ministry’s publication, shared by Anadolu, did not mention, as of August 20, any amount, delivery schedule, or additional military commitment resulting from the meeting.
