Sudan: Léon XIV calls for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of humanitarian corridors.

Speaking in English before the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father expressed his concern over the ongoing Sudanese conflict. He mentioned the situation in El Obeid, in North Kordofan State, where weeks of fighting expose many civilians to new dangers.

Leo XIV also asked the warring parties to ensure the population has access to aid. He called on the authorities to establish humanitarian corridors to allow the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of assistance to areas affected by the clashes.

The Pope assured that he prays for those suffering from the war and for an end to the violence. In his remarks, he also called for a change in attitude from “all those who sow violence.”

The Pope Requests International Mobilization

Leo XIV emphasized the responsibility of the international community in seeking a resolution to the conflict. He urged them to support initiatives aimed at quickly achieving a truce and to end a war that remains one of the deadliest crises while receiving insufficient international attention.

The Holy Father had previously addressed the Sudanese situation during a meeting at the Vatican in May with the Prime Minister of Sudan. He had reaffirmed the urgent necessity of reaching a ceasefire.

Several months earlier, during a speech before ambassadors accredited to the Holy See, the American Pope had described Sudan as a country turned into a “vast battlefield.” His new appeal comes as fighting continues to threaten civilian populations and complicate humanitarian access in several regions.
