South Africa: Luther Singh returns to Bafana Bafana after five years

Singh’s return is one of the most notable selections in Mosimane’s first final squad since his return to lead the Bafana Bafana. SuperSport reports that the forward has not worn the national jersey since 2021. Cassius Mailula and Shandre Campbell are also among the players recalled to the squad.

However, Lyle Foster does not make the final list after being included in the preliminary selection of 35 players. Mosimane has trimmed his squad to 30, explaining that five players are unavailable due to injury, while retaining a large part of the core used by South Africa in recent months.

The squad includes goalkeepers Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, and Ricardo Goss, as well as Teboho Mokoena, Themba Zwane, Relebohile Mofokeng, Iqraam Rayners, and Oswin Appollis. Yanela Mbuthuma, Puso Dithejane, Tashreeq Matthews, and Luther Singh are among the attacking options selected.

South Africa will host Guinea on September 26 at Orlando Stadium for their opening match of the qualifiers, before facing Eritrea on September 30 in Cairo. The Bafana Bafana will then remain in Egypt for a friendly match against the Pharaohs on October 4.

Mosimane was appointed by the South African Football Association on September 1 to take over the national team following the departure of Hugo Broos. His first two official matches in this new role will be against Guinea on September 26 and Eritrea on September 30.
