Sheryl Lee Ralph apologizes for calling Abbott Elementary the only true comedy

The 69-year-old comedian posted a statement on her Instagram stories on Tuesday. She explained that her choice of words was influenced by the excitement surrounding the series’ seven nominations and stated that her intention was to celebrate her team’s work without undermining that of other artists.

“Intent does not erase impact,” she admitted in her message, according to People. Sheryl Lee Ralph expressed her understanding that her comment may have seemed condescending and assured that she holds great respect for the writers, casts, and crews of other comedies.

The controversy arose on the red carpet at the ceremony when the actress told E! News that she hoped for a win for Abbott Elementary, which she described as the only “true comedy” in the category. This competition included The Bear, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, and Widow’s Bay.

The latter series ultimately won the award for Best Comedy. It accumulated a total of fourteen awards, including the Creative Arts Emmys, according to Entertainment Weekly. Sheryl Lee Ralph’s initial remark was also reported by Page Six.

Sheryl Lee Ralph won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2022 for her role as Barbara Howard. Abbott Elementary will return for its sixth season on October 7 on ABC.
