Senegal: Édouard Mendy retires after 59 caps and a AFCON title
Édouard Mendy announced on Sunday, September 13, 2026, the end of his international career with Senegal. At 34 years old, the Al-Ahli goalkeeper departs from the Lions of Teranga after eight years and 59 caps.
According to the Confederation of African Football, Mendy made his debut for Senegal in 2018. He concludes his international journey with 31 matches without conceding a goal and 34 goals allowed in total.
The highlight of his national team career remains the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which Senegal won against Egypt in a penalty shootout. This title marked the first in the history of the Lions of Teranga, and Mendy was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
The shot-stopper also participated in the 2022 and 2026 World Cups. His announcement, made in a video accompanied by the message “Thank you, Senegal,” closes a chapter that began under Aliou Cissé.
Mendy remains under contract with Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia. The CAF also notes that he was named the best goalkeeper at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2022.
