Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso sought to calm the speculation surrounding his future on the Madrid bench after the 2-0 defeat suffered on Sunday against Celta Vigo at the Santiago-Bernabéu. Put under pressure by a reverse marked by a Williot Swedberg brace, the Spaniard insisted he was paying no attention to rumours of a possible sacking.
Powerless against Celta’s solidity, Alonso saw his team concede once again in La Liga. Just minutes after the final whistle, whispers in Spain suggested the board might consider a change of coach in the coming days.
Questioned about his immediate future, the Madrid coach brushed off those rumours with a wave of the hand:
« The rumours that I’m going to be sacked? I’m not thinking about that. I’m only focused on Wednesday’s match », he said in reference to the Champions League clash with Manchester City. Xabi Alonso also insisted the dressing room remained united despite the current slump: « We’re all united », he said. With this latest defeat, Real Madrid now sit four points behind FC Barcelona, firmly installed at the top of the table.
