Fuel prices in WAEMU: Senegal tops the list, Niger records the lowest rate

The price of petrol has now reached 990 CFA francs per litre in Senegal, the highest in the bloc. By contrast, Niger offers the lowest rate at 499 CFA francs per litre in Niamey, creating a gap of about 500 CFA francs within the same economic area.

• Senegal: Petrol at 990 CFA francs after the rollback of a December cut | Diesel at 755 CFA francs.
• Cote d’Ivoire: Petrol at 905 CFA francs since August 1, after a rise to 875 CFA francs in May.
• Guinea-Bissau: Petrol at 899 CFA francs.
• Mali: Petrol at 875 CFA francs | Diesel at 940 CFA francs, the highest diesel price in the union.
• Burkina Faso: Diesel raised to 750 CFA francs on August 10.
• Benin: Petrol at 725 CFA francs | Diesel at 750 CFA francs, adjusted in May.
• Togo: Petrol at 725 CFA francs | Diesel at 750 CFA francs, the same rates as Benin.
• Niger: Petrol at 499 CFA francs in Niamey, the lowest rate in the bloc.

Middle East tensions and different national policies

This rise in pump prices is explained by the increase in crude oil prices on the international market. Since the end of February 2026, geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and military escalation in the Middle East have pushed Brent crude from 70 dollars to more than 95 dollars by mid-August.

The way this global rise is passed on varies from one WAEMU country to another, depending on budgetary room, subsidy mechanisms, fuel taxation and each state’s supply chains. If the 90-dollar-a-barrel threshold is maintained, new price revisions could follow in the region.
