Fake bills: the BCEAO calls for vigilance in the face of a viral video on social networks
The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) is sounding the alarm.

In response to the spread of a viral video on social media reporting the presence of presumed counterfeit bills, particularly in money transfer points, the issuing institute of the West African Monetary Union (UMOA) urges the public to exercise extreme caution.
Without directly addressing the specific cases presented in the video, the Central Bank emphasizes that knowing the security features remains the best defense against counterfeiting. It calls on all users in the UMOA area to adopt the reflex of authenticating each bill received during a cash transaction.
To help the public distinguish real bills from counterfeit ones, the BCEAO reminds that visual guides and details about the security features (watermark, security thread, raised printing, fluorescent patterns) are freely available in the section dedicated to banknotes and coins on its official website.
Cooperation with enforcement agencies
To maintain safety and trust in the common currency, the institution assures it is working closely with the judicial authorities and police services of member states specialized in combating counterfeiting.
Finally, the BCEAO reminds that the collective vigilance of each citizen remains essential to block the way to counterfeiting networks.
