Practical Magic 2 tops North American box office, dethroning Spider-Man

These initial estimates, released on Sunday, September 13, place the sequel to the cult classic from 1998 well ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The superhero film has dropped to second place with $8.4 million over the weekend.

Directed by Susanne Bier, Practical Magic 2 reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also reprise their roles, while Joey King and Maisie Williams represent a new generation of the family.

The story takes place twenty-five years after the first installment. The Owens women attempt to break the curse that has plagued their lineage, as Sally’s daughter uncovers new secrets about their family history.

Warner Bros. produced the film with a reported budget of $75 million. The $30 million opening is more than double the $13.1 million earned by the original Practical Magic during its launch in 1998, not adjusted for inflation.

The $30 million reported on Sunday remains a studio estimate. Final box office figures for the North American weekend are set to be released on Monday.
