Fortunately, it was more scare than damage on Monday, November 10, 2025, in Parakou. A fire broke out shortly before noon on an unoccupied plot in the Kpébié neighborhood, in the city’s first arrondissement.
The site, currently being developed to host a future garage, nearly became the scene of a tragedy.
According to gathered testimonies, the fire reportedly started from an improvised bonfire intended to burn brush and debris. The flames, fanned by the wind, quickly spread, reaching much of the lot and an old abandoned refrigerated container.
The situation worried nearby residents, who feared it might spread to neighboring homes.
Alerted in time, the firefighters of the Agence béninoise de protection civile deployed a team to the scene. Thanks to their quick response and the spontaneous help of some residents, the fire was contained in about ten minutes.
No injuries were reported, but the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following safety instructions when clearing plots.
An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of the fire and to identify any negligence that may have caused the incident.
