OpenAI establishes itself in Malaysia, Firmus exceeds 900 MW of contracted capacity

The exact capacity reserved for OpenAI and the value of the contract have not been made public. Firmus specifies, however, that its total contracted capacity, across all clients, now exceeds 900 megawatts with the addition of this agreement.

The group operates or is developing seven “AI factories” spread across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Two sites are currently operational, in Australia and Singapore, while five others are under development with a target to be commissioned within the next 24 months.

For OpenAI, the two future Malaysian sites must strengthen the capabilities required for its services in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Malaysia is thus consolidating its position among the regional hubs selected to host the energy-intensive infrastructures used to train and operate artificial intelligence models.

Firmus plans to deploy large-scale systems based on the next generation of Nvidia platforms, including Vera Rubin NVL72 and DSX. The company states its intention to combine computing power, cooling, and energy efficiency in standardized facilities.

The agreement comes as major artificial intelligence developers seek to quickly secure new computing capabilities. Competition for data centers, electricity, and specialized chips is intensifying in several Asia-Pacific markets.
