The Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, praised Antoine Semenyo’s immediate impact since his arrival at the English champions. Signed in January from AFC Bournemouth, the Ghanaian international quickly established himself as a key cog in the Citizens’ attacking play.
On Saturday, on Elland Road’s pitch, Semenyo once again stood out by scoring the match’s only goal, delivering a valuable 1-0 victory over Leeds United. Asked about the rise of his striker, Guardiola did not hide his satisfaction: “When you recruit players, there is always an intention, but you never know; the impact [of Semenyo] has been really good, not only in terms of goals“, the Spanish coach said after the match.
The Catalan manager also provided an update on Erling Haaland, still in the medical room. “I hope he returns; I don’t know [when he will return]“, he said, without committing to a precise timetable. With ten games remaining in a season still undecided, Semenyo seems ready to shoulder more responsibilities as City try to close the gap on the leader. His goal at Leeds takes his total to 14 goals and 4 assists in 27 Premier League matches. He will have the chance to continue his run on Wednesday, when Nottingham Forest visit the Etihad Stadium.
